Somers Fire & Rescue - PI Accident - September 9th, 2009 - 9th Street & Sheridan Road : SOMERS — A 13-year-old Washington Middle School student narrowly escaped injury Friday as the school bus she was exiting was hit by a Dodge Durango at the intersection of Sheridan Road and 9th Street.

“I just stepped off the bus when I heard it I just started running because I didn’t know if I was going to get hit.”

According to Kenosha County Sheriff Lt. Ken Weyker, the bus, which had been heading southbound on Sheridan, was stopped with all its emergency equipment employed.

A motorcycle and a PT Cruiser were properly stopped in the northbound lane when the driver of the Durango, heading northbound, struck the PT Cruiser and careened across the centerline into the side of the bus, near where the stop sign extends. The motorcyclist was able to get off the road, but tipped the bike.

None of the 18 students on the bus were injured, though several who were sitting near the location of the impact were visibly shaken.

“All of a sudden I just heard a skid stated a student who was sitting in the front seat on the side of impact, said. “It practically knocked me out of my seat.”

Two child passengers of the Durango were transported to a Racine hospital with minor injuries. No other injuries were reported. The driver of the Durango a 36-year-old man from Racine, was cited for inattentive driving.

Children on the bus were allowed to use the bus driver’s cell phone to call their parents and let them know they were okay. Many parents arrived at the scene to comfort their children and bring them home.

Your Bio

Welcome to fyrpix,

My name is Timothy J. Stein aka "Fyrpix"

My interest in the fire service began in 1980 a few years after my father had passed away when a Cudahy firefighter (the community in which I lived) took me under his wing and introduced me to the world of firefighting.

At that time I started taking photographs of area fires and fire departments in southern Milwaukee County until I relocated to Racine County in 1987 where I continue my passion of documenting the histories of area fire departments today.

During the past twenty eight years I have taken thousands of photographs documenting the histories of fire departments in southeast Wisconsin and have been given the rare opportunity as a civilian to be welcomed into a second family and treated as a member of these firefighting families over the years.

Often I am asked by area firefighters how they can get prints of the photographs that I have taken and I hope this site will satisfy their requests.

I hope that you enjoy your visit to fyrpix and please stop back often to see the firefighting action in southeast Wisconsin.
